Introducing Frolicking Florals, a queen/king size quilt made with my Honeycomb Stars quilt pattern.

This is the first time I’ve made a big bed size quilt just because - for love of fabric and patchwork. It was a big undertaking, that’s for sure! Still, I very much loved cutting and sewing with the large scale hexagon shape. It really showcases splashy printed fabrics to their best advantage and allowed me to thoroughly enjoy this collection of colorful florals that I’ve collected over the years.

The hexagons are set with triangles to create stars, a pattern originally inspired by basketweave. Darker colors transition gradually to lighter colors at the quilt edges, creating a gentle glowing effect.

I used four different main colors for the triangle background: Kona avocado, Kona grassy green, Kona cabbage and Kona snow. In addition to the solids, I mixed in some simple green prints for variety and because using scraps is always a good way to go.

This large bed quilt has been quilted with a fresh floral pattern. The quilting is open, rather than dense, keeping the quilt soft and light enough for daily use. I’ll be adding this quilting motif to my quilting library under the name Pansy. It has a bit of flower, a bit of leaf and a tiny swirl, with an overal airy feeling.

And the finished quilt? It’s ginormous - 104” wide and 97” tall. It’s sized for a queen or king bed, depending upon your bed height and preferences. I photographed it here on my friend’s bed, which is 180 cm wide, but rather low to the ground. If you’d like to give Frolicking Florals a good home, she’s just been listed in my Handmades shop. Compare measurements with your bed to check for a desirable fit.

So, she’s my second Honeycomb Stars quilt, but not my last! I’ll be sewing along with you during our upcomming quilt-along. This time I’m making an autumn-hued throw quilt, using luxurious wovens from the Warp & Weft collection. I’ve arranged for Florida-based Dragonfly Quiltworks to offer a limited number of identical quilt kits! Looking forward to getting started with Fabric Planning on October 11th.
