Honeycomb Stars Sew-Along
Let’s machine-sew Hexagons!
Do you love the look of quilts where the colors seem to change in gradual gradients? Whether ombre or multi-color, these blends are visually compelling and so satisfying to create.
The Honeycomb Stars quilt pattern helps guide your fabric choices by dividing up the quilt into different value sections. It’s entirely machine sewn and includes a version with small scale hexagons and another with larger scale hexagons. There are so many beautiful iterations to discover!

the Quilt
This patchwork design is created with two shapes: the hexagon and the triangle. Even though the patchwork looks intricate, it's actually straightforward to sew with no special seams. Traditionally pieced on the sewing machine. Suitable for confident beginners or intermediate quilters.
Pattern includes 2 sizes: throw and queen/king
STARRY NIGHT HONEYCOMB STARS QUILT
Color Palette: Mostly Monochromatic
Size: Throw, 58” x 59”
FROLICKING FLORALS HONEYCOMB STARS QUILT
Color Palette: Multicolored
Size: Queen/King, 104” x 97”
The pattern assumes no prior experience with sewing angled shapes. Lots of pictures break down the process of working with triangles, hexagons and diamonds so that you can accurately align pieces for happy seam allowances and sharp points.
Would you like to try your hand at creating a glowing value-based blend of Honeycomb Stars? This pattern is part of my Color Mentor series. As such it teaches more than just patchwork piecing. The pattern includes the basics of color value for quilting. Fabric requirements, cutting directions and layouts show how to group your colors by value to achieve a sense of beautiful radiating movement with your patchwork fabrics.
the Supplies
This is a stash friendly quilt! With its repeating shape structure, this quilt allows for lots of variation in fabrics. Feel free to use a greater variety of fabrics than the minimum suggested here. You can make substitutions too! For example, don’t have quite enough of one solid for your triangles? Just substitute two similar solids or even near-solids to fill the quota!
THROW SIZE QUILT
Hexagons: 5 dark value fabrics in 1/4 yard cuts, 5 mid value fabrics in 1/4 yard cuts, 5 mid-low value fabrics in 1/4 yard cuts and 2 low value fabrics in 1/4 yard cuts
Triangles: 1/2 yard dark value fabric, 1/2 yard mid value fabric, 1/2 yard mid-low value fabric and 1/3 yard low value fabric
Backing: 3 1/3 yards
Note: You can use fat quarters instead of 1/4 yard cuts for the hexagons.
Templates
Templates for both sizes are included in the pattern, of course. If you prefer an acrylic ruler, they’re shipping now from Tales of Cloth (Australia, ships worldwide) or Dragonfly Fabrics (USA). These rulers have 1/4” seam allowances, since they are intended for machine sewing.
Remember, the Honeycomb Stars pattern includes two sizes; the original throw size quilt with 2” hexagons and a new queen/king size with 4” hexagons. The large bed quilt actually has slightly less pieces than the throw!
