Honeycomb Stars: Assemble Blocks

Some quilt tops are pretty much finished once you finish the blocks. Well, my friends, Honeycomb Stars is not one of them. It takes a good chunk of time to join our hexagon blocks to make a quilt top. Luckily, it’s all normal patchwork piecing - no y-seams or hand sewing here. Get into a groove and enjoy the rhythm this week!

Coming to this late? You can still use the resources to sew along. Find all the relevant info over at the master sew-along post. It’s a digital pattern, so you can grab it in a flash and get started.

Week 6: Assemble

Step one, of course, is to get all those quilt blocks arranged in your lovely value blend. You can follow suggested layout from the Honeycomb Stars pattern or feel your own way. Either way, I suggest you start at the center, with the dark blocks and build outward. No need to be truly symmetrical about it. Variation and unexpected choices keep things interesting.

Don’t have a design wali? Consider working in batches of 4 rows at a time. Arrange the rows on a large table or the floor beside your sewing station. After sewing rows and joining them into a large piece of patchwork, consider using washi tape to mark the upper right corner and write the group number on the tape. Otherwise, it will be difficult to keep things oriented!

Don’t forget to add the extra low value triangles at the edges of rows before joining rows together! The joined rows look a bit silly at this point, but all the fabric is right where you need it.

Once the quilt top is complete, you’ll have the pleasure of trimming those protruding triangles flush with the half hexagons. And perhaps a fairy will then appear, wearing tights that exactly match your quilt, and bearing her sweet admiration. I hope you are so lucky!

Congrats to @DeborahGun, winner of our Week 5 sew-along giveaway. I think this is the perfect way to fussy cut and thoroughly enjoy your Heather Ross collection!

I love it and look forward to seeing it finished someday.

This week share a photo of your Honeycomb Star project with hashtag #HoneycombStars. This time it doesn’t matter where you are in the process. I just want to see what you’re up to. You may post multiple times, and each photo will be a chance to win!

Our final sew-along prize is gifted by Dragonfly Quiltworks, based in Florida. One lucky sew-along participant will will his or her favorite choice of extra wide backing fabric and binding fabric for your throw-sized Honeycomb Stars quilt! Isn’t that convenient? That’s 2 yards of 108” wide fabric for the backing and a 1/2 yard cut of any regular quilting cotton for the binding.

Dragonfly Quiltworks has a particularly impressive collection of extra-wide backing fabrics. They’re an economical and easy way to finish a quilt, so if you haven’t tried one yet, I definitely encourage it! Here’s a quick sampling of what’s on offer:

Giveaway is open internationally! The lucky winner will be randomly selected on November 24th, just before Thanksgiving. That gives you a few extra days to be sewing and entering to win. Happy sewing!
