in the Quilting Studio, no. 32

Wow have I been BUSY in November and December with longarm quilting! I’m super grateful to have had a packed schedule these months in the lead up to Christmas vacation. What a contrast to last year, when I didn’t have longarm business do quilt during the entire month of December. Today I’m finishing my last customer quilt of the year and then taking a break from longarm quilting for the holidays. Feels good!

Black/White Geometric Quilt by Heike Räsch-Mimler

The first quilt I want to show you today is a geometric wonder by Heike of @heirami_. Just take a look - - -

With its high-contrast color scheme and wild play of geometric shapes, this quilt has quite the cool, urban vibe. If you take a look at Heike’s Instagram account, you’ll see more of the same. Very cool and very modern.

I suspect that, like Heike’s other quits, this is her own design. It’s actually a straightforward block grid layout, but since she’s used only black and white, the block grid seems to shift where same-colors touch. I love the effect.

I suggested Stud quilting for this quilt, which suits the modern, minimalist vibe. This is what I consider medium-density quilting. Most of the lines are about 1/2” apart, providing lots of reinforcement without making the quilt dense and stiff.

Book Collection by Carola Koubek

Some quilts just strike me immediately as a really fun sew, and that's how I feel about this book quilt sewn by Carola of @Mir_a_laska.

I made a small book quilt once with do. Good Stitches, but sewing a few books didn’t scratch my itch. I think I need to make a whole lovely library, like Carola.

Carola and I decided together on Baptist fan quilting. You might notice that it has a little more definition than usual. That’s because this quilt has wool batting, which has much more loft as compared to my go-to Quilter’s Dream Natural Select batting. The wool puffs up between the quitling lines, emphasizing each one. Wool makes a warmer, plusher quilt, but it does require special care. I’ve not yet had a wool-batted quilt in our throw quilt rotation at home. Maybe it’s time to give that a go?

Coming Home by Ida Goede

If today’s first quilt was minimalist, this quilt is maximalist! Ida from @IdaGoede brought me a box full of special quilts for longarm quilting service. One was Coming Home, designed by Sarah Fielke.

I apologize that I don’t have a photo that shows the whole quilt at once, but then again this quilt is one that really demands that you look closer. The details are amazing!

We opted for Orange Leaf quilting in a medium scale for Ida’s Coming Home quilt. The goal was to keep it soft and fluffy, but with so much applique and tiny patchwork, it needs a reasonable amount of quilting for durability.

I love the rows of houses, don’t you? Ida has used adorabel fabric in sweet ways to play with the patchwork style.

I found I just couldn’t stop looking and looking and looking! I’ll leave you with one last close look at a very charming house. What a lovely place to come home!
