I LOVE it when a quilt is finally finished. It feels so good to witness the transformation of pretty patchwork into a three-dimensional, useful object. How lucky then that I am a longarm quilter! Not only do I now enjoy this stage of my own quilt-making (instead of dreading the quilting), but I get to live vicariously through the finishes of my clients. Hehe. I am so glad that you like to share the fun via my Quilting Studio series.

Dots on Point by Brigitte Heitland
Oooh! Check out another cool, modern quilt from the studio of German designer Brigitte Heitland aka Zen Chic. She’s cooking up a quilt-along for this quilt pattern, which is called Dots on Point. Join her newsletter to stay in the know.
Being a designer and all, Brigitte usually knows exactly what she wants when it comes to longarm quilting. I am happy to oblige, of course; first because bringing my customer’s vision to life is the whole point and second because she has excellent taste. Brigitte asked for this bubble quilting pattern sized about the same scale as the dots themselves. Fun!
These dots are made with a fusible, so Brigitte’s choice of pattern was also practical. By opting for a large, open quilting pattern she has allowed the quilt to become soft and squishy. Yep, even fusible applique quilts can be a pleasure to cuddle if you quilt them right!
Heart Sampler by Jose Hoogeveen
Large scale, open quilting allows a quilt to become soft and squishy, but there are different reasons to opt for dense quilting at times. Check out this oversized sampler quilt made by one of my most prolific Dutch customers, Jose Hoogeveen.
Jose asked for dense quilting, and I could see why. When quilting a quilt with complex or diverse patchwork, one often prefers that the quilting takes a background roll. There is already enough to see here with such a variety of heart shapes. This modern hexagon motif doesn’t compete or overwhelm the patchwork by adding more frilly hearts. Plus, look how nicely it lays on the bed! Dense patchwork makes for tidy beds.
This is a large quilt, so the quilting took hours and hours - about six hours to be exact! Good thing that my machine is computer-guided. That is the only way I could offer such dense quilting at an affordable price.
Stair step Rail Fence by Gillie
Some quilts have very special stories. This one is made of fabrics gifted from a quilter to her best friend. She brought a jelly roll of batiks home to The Netherlands after a trip to the States, intending to give them to her friend. Sadly though, she passed away soon after returning from her trip. Her granddaughter stepped in to deliver the gift, knowing for whom it was intended.
I know, how terribly sad! But the story doesn’t end there. The friend decided to make this quilt with the gift fabric, adding just that bit of golden yellow like a thread of hope running through. The quilt will in turn be gifted back to the granddaughter, a symbol of grandmother’s love and the bond that ties these three women together.
She’s quilted with floating hearts, to remind the granddaughter that love. I was touched to become a piece of that story.
