My longarm quilting machine has been up and running for about a month now, here in The Netherlands. While things are moving a little slower than I’d like, I’ve still had the pleasure of quilting several beautiful projects. I’m excited today to share some with you! It’s always a treat to see other artist’s work in person and then an honor to add my own touch to their quilts. I hope you enjoy!
Diamonds in the Outback by Ashley Newcomb
The very last customer quilt I finished in the United States didn’t make it into my final In the Quilting Studio post. But it’s too good to let you miss!
If you already follow Ashley Newcomb via Film in the Fridge, you may have seen her stunning Diamonds in the Outback quilt. It made an immediate impression on me when she first shared the quilt top in 2017. Imagine my excitement when it arrived in my quilting studio earlier this year!!! This quilt is made with the Outback Wife collection by Cathi of gertrudemade. They’re heavier fabrics inspired by vintage barkcloth. The texture is unique, and the colors stunning.
I quilted it with an elongated Crystal Ball design, running vertically to compliment the diamonds. This somewhat dense pattern fully secures the half square rectangle patchwork and makes sure the unique fabric holds up well to cuddles and washings. When you’re not sewing with quilting cottons, take care to provide adequate quilting. I learned the hard way when my own quilts made of non-quilting cotton wore out quickly.

Circles by Christiane Tobias
One of my first European customers was Christiane Tobias, who asked me to custom quilt her circles quilt. She was drawn to the way I quilted my Plum Pudding quilt, and wanted something similar for her project.
This laborious quilting design requires a circular quilting pattern to be placed by hand on each and every circle block. And this quilt had a lot of them! By enlarging the quilting circles so that they slightly overlap, I was able to reduce the total amount of circles to be quilted by approximately half. Since custom quilting is charged by the time involved, this cut costs while still providing the look Christiane had fallen in love with. Yay!

Sampler by Karin Verbis-Glasbrenner
Fresh off the longarm today is this sampler quilt made in fabrics by Maureen Cracknell. Karin started it as a Block of the Month and then opted to take her own path, choosing blocks that especially delighted her.
Karin prefers more open quilting, so we settled on my Lily quilting design. It’s naturally more open and looks pretty scaled up to allow the blocks plenty of room to breathe. It finishes the quilt with a light touch. I suspect it will be quite cozy!
And the back is too special to miss!
