twin Twinkles for Aria + Liam

Such a feel-good finish!  I've been aiming to finish new twin quilts for Aria and Liam before baby arrives.  You see, Aria and Liam moved into a shared room to allow for Eleni's nursery, until our new girlie is someday ready for a bottom bunk bed.  As you all know, I've been putting a lot of time and energy and love into Eleni's nursery.  With all of that, I wanted to show the big kids that they're on my mind too.

I made them each sawtooth stars quilts in their chosen colors, and dad made them a new red bookshelf.  Today we straightened up the room (full disclosure:  they don't keep this shared space nearly so clutter-clean), put on the quilts and took pictures.  Come see!

Both quilts are backed with Carolyn Friedlander Doe Wide backing.  It comes 108" wide, which means I didn't have to piece a thing.  I love using wide backings on bed quilts.  The back doesn't really get seen anyways!  This simple, graphic print felt right with the classic colors and design of these quilts.

I quilted free motion on my Juki machine, using my fastest finish technique: the continuous eight pattern.  These quilts are filled with Warm & Plush batting, a slightly thicker, all-cotton batting by The Warm Company, makers of Warm & Natural and Warm & White.  When I basted the quilts on the floor I could feel that the batting is slightly thicker under my knees (nice!), but it's not so much thicker that the quilts felt bulky rolled up and worked through my machine when quilting.  I think the extra warmth will come in quite handy, as we keep our home rather cool in winter.  I'd recommend Warm & Plush batting if you're looking for something warmer, but low-loft and machine washable.

Bindings are an assortment of Denyse Schmidt prints.  Her modern/traditional style is perfect for this quilt.  Actually many of my stars are by Denyse too!  Finished with the zigzag method, as always!

I'm happy to report that Aria and Liam are pretty pleased with their new digs!  And now this mama can start on some new quilts - clamshells, hearts, stripes, oh my! There is one thing on my list left to sew for baby.  Maybe I'll start that today?  If those clams don't get me first...
