Barn Blocks

A little while ago I heard from Kristi (aka Federlily) about a new business she and her family have embarked upon called Modern Barn Blocks. I was instantly curious.

About two years ago, my family moved to a rural community along a small barn quilt trail. I appreciate the sense of community that quilt trails create and not much excites me more than meeting a fellow quilter/maker. As much as I enjoy barn quilts, I realized that not everyone can create a large hand-painted barn quilt and even more evident, not everyone has a large barn to hang it on.

Now I happen to own an old barn.  An old tumbling-down barn that makes for great photo backgrounds, but not much else.  Even so, I've thought how cool it would be to put up a barn quilt.  Cool, but not so practical as you can't see our barn at all from the street!  These little Modern Barn Blocks have much of the fun of the concept, without all the work and feel more suited to private backyard spaces too.

My aunt and uncle have been creating outdoor nativity scenes for about 8 years using heavy weight PVC and digital printing technology. With their help, we have created a unique product for barn quilts that are lighter weight than wood, resistant to the natural elements and printed with beautiful color and precision.

I love that "put a quilt on it" motto.  Ha!  Isn't that how we live inside our houses, already?  Now we can take the patchwork outside!

When she asked me if I might like one in exchange for helping to spread the word, my answer was... "Um, yes!!!"

It arrived carefully packaged, a 23" square of outdoor personality.  The blocks are not pre-drilled in case you want to set yours on a picture ledge inside.  It comes with a few ideas for hanging.  My husband opted to drill four holes and attach via screws.

I decided to hang mine on our tool shed.  It's not tumbling-down like our real barn and shows off well across the field from our house.

Well, if your interest is piqued, I have good news!  Modern Barn Blocks are already being offered at an introductory rate of about $55.  You can save an additional 10% now through Sunday night with code "stitchedincolor", plus there's free shipping!  Right now they are only shipping the the United States.  Maybe as they get more established, they'll ship internationally too.
