our Color Wheel
Of course one can't teach a class about color without spending some time with a color wheel. There are oodles of them and all sorts of fascinating views on color relationships, but I decided to stitch up one of my very own to express color as I see it and use it in fabric form.
The colors abundant in a postmodern quilter's palette may be less intense and more nuanced than those on a typical color wheel. We have our weaknesses (aqua, anyone?) that must be represented too.
This quilt is made with my Wheel Quilt pattern, originally created for Curves Class and now offered as a stand alone in my pattern shop. The pattern is not included in our upcoming Color Intensive workshop; rather I am using the finished quilt as a teaching tool. We'll be talking quite about out the color wheel in week no. 2.
I quilted with Aurifil 12 wt thread, a thicker thread which shows up beautifully for straight line quilting.
This creamy rainbow binding has been languishing in my stash. It was perfect here!
For the 4 background fabrics, I used my trusty Comma periods, Kona Snow and Mama Said So Snaps.
On the back, this Denyse Schmidt print echos some of the shapes (circle, square, quarter circle), while making a nice contrast to the colorful front.
Though it's not all dull back there. I used cutting scraps to create this triangling bit of happiness!
Thanks for your enthusiastic comments about my Ikat quilt design yesterday. Yes, that twin-sized quilt pattern (easy to adjust smaller!) will be included in Color Intensive. I couldn't resist throwing in a new, special Stitched quilt with the class, just for fun!
I hope you're getting as excited as I am about taking a spin with color soon. Registration opens on Monday! We're almost there!!
