Birdies or Pincushions?

Tomorrow night is our November meeting for Sewing Through the Year.  And as of this morning, I officially had yet to nail down the project.  Eeep!!!  I don't know how things got so last minute!  Didn't November just start?

I've officially been procrastinating on testing our November group sewing project.  I had in mind to do pincushions from Joelle Hoverson's book Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts.  It's a lovely book, if you haven't seen it already.  Practically a classic.  (Just ignore the time guides though, if you have children, meals to cook, life to live, you know how it goes...)  But, well, the pincushion involves sewing curves.  Not sure we're all ready for that.

or pincushion

So last night I started a test version myself.  It's pretty easy curves sewing, but there are also points involved where all 8 patchwork pieces meet at top and bottom.  My pincushion didn't come out as strong at one of the points as I'd like.  Plus you have to do a subtle, but effective whipstitch to close after stuffing and then there's the wrapping with embroidery floss, during which my fabrics wanted to bunch and wrinkle.  Naughty little things.  The end result is pretty, but I wonder if our sewing group will come out frustrated on the other side?

Hmm.....  Inspired by this scrappy flock and this tutorial, I set out to make an alternative project.  It's not nearly so practical or "on topic" but, well, I'm feeling distractable.

Turns out these are quite addictive.  I could have just kept cutting and cutting up scraps!  I so want to make a whole flock.  Hopefully Aria will want in!  The cutting takes no time and neither does the machine sewing.  Both are suited for casual, not-so-exact sewists.  That's definitely us on Thursday nights!

birdies

Stuffing, embroidering eyes and closing with a hanging loop seemed to go a bit slow, but that might have been me.  Anyone else wonder if listening to an audio book cuts your productivity in half?  But, I like them.  And they're fun.  AND, we'll still get to practice sewing curves!  These are easier curves for beginners too.  So....

birdies!

The birds take the win.
