the "Baby Makes" list
If you know me very well, you know I like lists. And schedules. And goals. And grand plans. I also kind of like to sew... a lot! It's not an exaggeration to say that I have been pining to sew for my own baby every since I learned how. In the time I have left before baby is born, there's nothing I would enjoy more than to stitch away at pretty things to welcome her!
With your suggestions and my list in hand, I have created a new Google Calendar Task list called "Baby Makes" where I can easily track and prioritize (and re-prioritize) these projects. I'm prepared to be flexible and productive. Here they are in order of possible attack, as of today!
Hooded Towel - I plan to repurpose these bright pink towels, combined with some Folksy Flannel for fun.
Moses Basket Sheets - Sheets are an easy make and an ideal opportunity to infuse favorite fabrics into our home.
Pacifier Clips - I made some awhile back for a gift. We are huge on pacifiers in this family (until they turn one), so clips are a nice extra.
Crib Sheets - Ditto on the crib sheets. I have nothing against buying sheets, but know I'll have more fun making them, and especially choosing the fabrics! I'm thinking some Cotton and Steel basics!
Bumper - I still think bumpers are useful. Ever since I came across this alphabet print by Carolyn Gavin, I've been imagining it as a bumper. Don't you think? This project intimidates me a bit, but the visual payoff will be worthwhile.
Changing Mattress Covers - Here's another chance to put my fabrics in the nursery! I'll also prepare some wool puddle pads for quick-change, mess catchers.
Curtains - Check out this Ikea fabric I bought for making nursery curtains! It's so yellow and whimsical! As soon as the room is floored, curtains will move up to the top of the list!
Closet Curtain - The nursery closet it smallish, so I'm going to try removing the door and working with a curtain instead. Plus, I'll make it patchwork style, like my voile patchwork curtains! Yum.
Voile Lovies - We use silky lovey blankets as sleep training objects when baby moves on from the pacifier. They become treasured keepsakes. I'm so glad I'll be able to make it myself this time.
Noodlehead Divided Basket - You all convinced me that this would be so useful by the changing table. Interfacing.. ugh. If I get worn out, don't worry; I'll let this go.
Alphabet Needlework Collage - I have this ambitious idea to embroidery and cross stitch letters in various fonts and sizes as individual works, and hang them on the wall over the changing table. I'm going to start with the letter "e" and see how I like it. No pressure.
Double Gauze Blanket - I hardly ever have good reason to work with this delicious lightweight fabric. Seems like a baby blanket would be the perfect excuse! Thanks for the idea.
Booties - You suggested making cloth booties that stay on better than socks. Makes sense, but I need to find a pattern.
Flannel Bibs - I already have 3 absorbent flannel bibs, but will make a few more to start us off. If baby is a dribbler, I'll have to bust out more later (or buy).
Cloth Books - These are so sweet! I've seen baby books featuring items like boats, ducks and bears. Others focus on one color per page. Sounds like a fun project (or two)!
Floor Quilt - Don't worry, I already have a few favorite baby quilts for Eleni stashed away. This make would be a thicker quilt that's more suitable for our hard wooden floors in the stage where rolling over and sitting up involve crashes.
Oilcloth Baprons - I made this bapron as a gift awhile back. This design seems nice for a solid food bib. I've never sewn with oilcloth, but this could be the push I need.
Boxy Pouch - Thanks for the idea of making a boxy pouch to store rarely used toiletry items. This would be nice to tuck away in a drawer under the changing table.
Embroidered Poetry Blanket - I have a luxurious cream baby blanket that's entirely plain. Wouldn't it be nice to add some black script embroidery?
Sew Knit Baby Clothes - Honestly these aren't even on the actual task list because the are the most intimidating baby project for me. But if I get lots done and still have energy, I could tackle knits for the first time. Or, I could wait until after baby is born...
Ok, so that might be a very long, very ambitious list... but I'm nothing if not ambitious! I promise not to take it badly if I get only half of it done. But, hey, I have five months and sewing is my job, remember?
