patchwork Makeup Roll
I love patchwork! And I love making useful things. Mostly that combines to equal quilts, quilts, quilts, but also curtains, cushions, chair covers.... and even makeup rolls.
Actually, first makeup rolls. Creating a makeup roll for my own use in 2010 was one of my first project designs. Since I couldn't find something like it on Etsy to hold my brushes and compacts and mascara - the whole shabang - I was forced to design my own. I thought, "Here is something I could make to sell!" and set about refining my design while churning out a whole series for gift-giving.
Well, the makeup-roll-making business was a flop, but pattern design wasn't. My Makeup Roll pattern was my first and is probably my most popular pattern. The top flap keeps everything snug and protected so that nothing can fall out. The design was streamlined and updated in 2012 so that pockets are lined and easy-to-assemble. This pattern is suitable for a confident beginner. No zippers! No velcro! No interfacing (we use batting)!
Nowadays there's no one on my gift lift who hasn't already received a makeup roll, so when a very nice lady contacted me recently asking that I make one for her, I gave it some thought, said, "why, yes!" and here we are. She love all things Anna Maria Horner, so we featured the Field Study Tambourine as the main fabric and I added what Anna Maria scraps I could find, even a Good Folks!
If you're looking for some patchwork goodness to give away this holiday season, maybe consider a makeup roll. It's something practical and pretty that she can use every day! The project takes only about 2-3 hours to cut and sew. Today this one is on its way to Texas. Thanks, Paula, for giving me an excuse to revisit an old favorite!
