Red, Red Stars quilt

Some weekends are for sewing, and this last one I claimed as such. I set out to transform a design wall full of stars into a real-life, cozy quilt. And that I did!

Section by section, edge by edge, a sea of stars came together and a quilt top was born.

Not just born, but quilted and bound - Hoorah!

At these times you have to remember that having a longarm at home is sort of cheating. Also, I reaaaalllly wanted to be able to get started on my orange peel quilt, hee.

So this is my red, red, red, completely red STARS quilt. Yay!

Honestly, I had my doubts along the way, but she turned out pretty darn well, I’d say. Red enough? Check. Stars enough? Check. NINETY stars, to be exact, which is pretty impressive for a throw quilt of 57” x 63”.

And just to make sure that the message doesn’t get lost, the back is also Red. It was a perfect opportunity to use some cool prints that shine best when they’re not cut up for patchwork.

This quilt celebrates the rich beauty and brilliant confidence of red, red, Red. The stars sparkle on a scrappy cream and peach background, with splashes of bright white and royal lavender. This intricate, interlocking patchwork allows for a maximum of stars with a minimum of seams. If you squint your eyes, you may no longer see stars, but rather two grids of sparkling squares.

In my opinion, the touch of lavender is intriguing. It reminds me of blush on a ripe piece of fruit. Just a touch of extra color, perfectly so.

I surrounded the real lavender pieces with lavender-pinks to soften the transition between the lavenders and the peach/cream background elements - an engaging creative task.

I quilted Red Red Stars with diamond wave quilting. The ovals and diamonds create a soft, flowing texture while adequately reinforcing the patchwork. She’s bound in a cream fabric with metallic accents from Cotton & Steel.

So, that’s a wrap, friends! You can find Red Red Stars in my Handmades Shop, where she’s on the look out for a forever home.

xoxo,

Rachel
