a quilt top
Yesterday I enjoyed some time by myself for an unexpected sew-in, courtesy of my thoughtful mother-in-law. I worked on this chevron quilt all. day. long.

Good thing too, because I just managed to finish the quilt top by the end of the day! Let's recap.

This quilt is made up of 45 degree diamonds, featuring prints from Anna Maria Horner's Pretty Pottent collection, a few blender prints from my stash, some linen and Essex linen, plus lots of Kona cotton solids.

The diamonds are sewn together in long rows. Looooong rows! Here I'm adding triangles at the top and bottom of each row to finish them off with straight edges.

Then the diamond rows sew together. As a result of carefully placed fabrics, they create chevron shapes. This was such a pain-free way to create an even, geometric chevron motif. It could also be used to make a zigzag quilt without half square triangles. Definitely fewer seams than a half-square triangle zigzag quilt!

This quilt has an earthy-summery vibe. I think the mocha brown linen really cements the mood and gives a nice contrast to the vivid Pretty Potent prints.

And did I mention it's a KING sized quilt? This puppy is huge. Each chevron row is 11" wide and 90" long, to give you a sense of scale. When I heard my friend has a king sized bed, I was sure glad to be working with such a big shape! I hope to baste it today. I'm telling you I'm SO glad I use 505 basting spray. Can you imagine all the basting pins this sucker would require? And then I'll get to find out how my Juki feels about king sized quilts...
