Jade + Peach
Have you met Emma Lamb? Her progressively peachy blog is one of my color muses. I set aside her "making everyday beautiful" posts for just the right moment, like a bit of chocolate to be savored in good time.
In May Emma highlighted Jade & Peach, presenting a fantastic collage of images that immediately sent me to the fabric cabinet to ponder. But alas, "Jade & Peach" seemed sorely lacking in my stash. Indeed, Emma's perfect Jade doesn't even exist on the Kona color card. GASP!
Not to be outdone by practicalities, I zeroed in on the image above with all my creative energies. Something about this space, so splashy white, so punky peach, so quietly yellow, is perfectly balanced in it's chic black and white allure (room and photo by Fjeldborg). I really couldn't get it out of my head... so naturally, a quilt must be made. It must be made! It must.
Let me tell you, it's not easy to find peach fabric! I know that peach and forest green are often equated with all that is outdated, but you couldn't convince me that the room above is anything but glorious! Luckily, my friend Alice at Fresh Modern Fabrics had the time to help me track down some peach. We referenced the Kona color card, the common language of quilters, as in, "no, not like Kona Ice Peach, it's really Kona Peach I'm after" and "does that print tend more towards Kona Melon?". Ah, good times. Wait, did that sound sarcastic? I'm serious.
Ta da! I love it! Lizzy House' Swiss Chard Pearl Bracelet is the only fabric I've found that gets at that jade - not too blue, not too green. We figured after all that work that we ought to share the bundle with others. Alice has a limited stock of Jade Princess bundles now available at Fresh Modern Fabrics!
And today I've had the pleasure of cutting into it. I've begun a new quilt that's mostly peach and cream with black, white and gray, a sprinkle of yellow and a dash of jade. My latest favorite basic, Comma Chalk Periods, is serving as a background fabric. Wish I could buy a bolt of that stuff.
Here's my first block! It's not quite perfect, as I forgot a key construction technique in my haste, but I think it's darn pretty. Looking forward to making lots more dogwood blossom blocks, using this applique approach - quick and easy! I've always said I'd like to make a whole quilt of the dogwood blossom, which was the center of my Modern Medallion quilt. But that reverse applique approach was definitely time-consuming. So when I realized that we could make this user-friendly version as a practice project during the applique theme of the Penny Sampler class, I sure did the happy dance! Looking forward to sharing more as the month continues.
