Stuffies!

Yesterday I played hookie from "responsible" curves sewing and "timely" Christmas sewing to make...

Owl family

owl stuffies!  Yes indeedy, and it was fun.  These are my first stuffies and I had lots of help of the little people kind, so be gentle.  They are about the easiest thing I've ever made though!  I took the idea from here.  It's not exactly a tutorial, but a general idea of how to cut the pieces and put things together.

buttons from Sew Love Fabrics!

I made this little one for starters from Anna Maria Horner flannel scraps.  So soft, so cuddly!  And these pretty buttons were handy thanks to Ruth of Sew Love Fabrics who sent them in a package months and months ago.  I made eyes for all five owls from this single card.  Yeah!

she's totally my favorite

She's totally my favorite.  Isn't she sweet hanging out with my solids?  Don't you think she wants to stay?  Well, tis not to be.  No my friends, she is destined for a land far, far away.  Or actually just downtown as the case may be.  You see we are journeying to a children's hospital with some other families next Wednesday, bearing gifts for the dear children who have to live away from their families in the hospital, due to their illness.  I know it will be a meaningful experience for us all.

for the boys...

Aria and Liam watched me whip up owl #1 (literally whip up - seriously a fast project people) and then they eagerly set out to select fabrics for the rest of them.  Liam's "boy" owls feature that cool space invader print on their bellies, which I had picked up on a whim from the novelty section at Hawthorne Threads.  When Brandon came home he said that they were, and I quote, "very good colors for a boy".  Awesome!  Score!

Aria chose a Kumari garden print

Aria was drawn to this Kumari Gardens print, which I paired with some red velvet from a deconstructed old Christmas tree skirt,

"Big mama" in Peacock Lane

and this colorful number from Peacock lane. The red velvet tummies are just begging to be petted.  So fun to put to good use some of my colorful, more childish fabrics!

what we did yesterday...

Apparently, to the kiddos, bigger is better, so we only made the one tiny owl.  The kids were able to help by using my Go Baby! cutter to cut the felt circles that I hand stitched to the bottom of each owl to hide the gathering point. They also cut up unwanted batting to make stuffing, since I didn't actually have any loose stuffings on hand!

so cuddly in flannel!

So, we'll enjoy these little visitors for a bit.  And, next, I'd better get back to my Christmas sewing!
