made in Central Park
Do you have any friends whom you love, love, love, but there's one thing about them that you really don't understand?
I have known my dear friend Miranda since we were wee little things. As adults our friendship really blossomed - we went on double dates with our future husbands, were pregnant with our first babies at the same time, both chose a similar birth experience, both ended up homeschooling and though now separated by quite a lot of distance, still trade parenting advice and honest-to-goodness chats on a fairly regular basis. With all that we have in common... I still don't know what Miranda likes. As in what clothes she likes, home decor she likes, colors she likes... her style? I've tried to tease this out, made plenty of guesses and it's like we're speaking a different language. She definitely has a style, but I cannot wrap my brain around it.
Miranda also put me on to quilting. So, clearly, I owe her a lot! I've never had an excuse to sew her anything, so when she got pregnant post-Rachel-loves-quilting, I offered a baby quilt. And, I almost made her one... but she didn't like Meet the Gang! (And I'm laughing here, people, because I really love her and obviously am not frustrated with her one bit. Plus, I know that many people might not like Meet the Gang, it's just a case in point).
So, where were we? Let's cut to the chase - I made her a makeup roll. I've yet to meet a women who wears any makeup who doesn't want one of these. And, unlike a baby quilt, this is something that's for her. I hope she feels loved whenever she uses it, and I hope - I really, really hope - that she likes these fabrics!
The outer print is a large floral from Central Park by Kate Spain, which I bought early this year at Whipstitch. Even when I bought it I knew it wasn't "me". I'm just not so soft and pretty. Regardless, I think it's a gorgeous floral that I knew someone would love, perhaps someone with vintage-y leanings. I mean, doesn't it remind you a bit of a vintage sheet?
And, no, I don't know if Miranda has vintage-y leanings. I mean, how should I know I've just known her for as long as I can remember (wink)? But, I'm going with the logic that if it's not "me" it might be "her", since she is not me, etc. etc. All of the interior pockets are also Central Park prints, excepting the Maybe print on the left in the little Mary Kay eyeshadow pockets. Maybe is from Anna Maria Horner's Innocent Crush collection, but, shhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell Miranda!
I'm going to send this off to her now, since it's not a Christmas gift after all. But, that said, if you do know someone who would like one for Christmas, I would be remiss not to send you over to my Pattern Shop. My Makeup Roll pattern is a 13-page PDF pattern that includes several pocket variations to make a cosmetic roll that suits you or your loved one. Miranda does wonders with eye shadows, so her version is filled with little pockets! You can see the others I've made right here.

This pretty little thing was made by Saskarina, whom I had the pleasure of sewing with at The Sewing Summit. Her bold use of complimentary colors makes this makeup roll totally pop.
I'll say it again... that's the cutest little "ugly duckly" evah!
I also love this fresh mix of fabrics by Sew it Pretty. Don't her cosmetics look happy...
and downright chic with that snazzy leather cording closure?
