This is a 6-month version, so your quilt will be done in September. Pas de Deux is a sampler quilt that feels like patchwork ballet! I was inspired with Pas de Deux to interweave many styles of patchwork in a modern, non-linear way. As I sketched, the patchwork spun and danced, bringing to mind a pas de deux, which is a dance for two. In fact, each patchwork grouping can be visually organized as two main colors, providing guidance for color choices while leaving room to explore many joyful pairings.

Wedge Crosses, Postage Stamp Stars, Transparency, Orange Peel, Still Point, Sawtooth Burst and so much more - each patchwork ensemble is its own lovely dance. Together they make up a stunning repertoire that’s as delightful to behold as it is to sew.

Unlike other sampler quilts, you won’t make just one block in each style. Instead, Pas de Deux invites you to dig into each shape and repeat it for awhile, before moving onto something new. It’s a stimulation combination of novelty and repetition!

Stay inspired and creatively engaged in 2022. Especially if you have fabric scraps, this quilt is a chance to make a little patchwork magic.

Yes, Pas de Deux is SUPER scrap friendly. Right from the start you’ll get a master list of scraps to cut, should you like to work ahead!

Skill level: Suitable for intermediate quilters. During the course of the year, you will learn techniques for applique, partial seams, foundation paper piecing and y-seams. No prior experience with these techniques is assumed. Pattern club includes detailed directions. Advanced quilters will also enjoy the journey!

Round 2: Block-of-the-Month Club

Pas de Deux 2022 BOM is a steady stream of patchwork fun. Sew-along with us as we bring this modern sampler quilt to life, sewing group by group of beautifully interwoven patchwork April - September 2022.

Comfortable Pace

The block-of-the-month is thoughtfully paced so that assembly is interspersed throughout the months to keep you organized and engaged. Expect to sew the equivalent of six or so 12” blocks per month.

Skill-building

Most of the sewing is traditional piecing, but we’ll also use special techniques in their simplest forms. If you've never appliquéd, foundation pieced, used y-seams or worked with partial seams, this is a great way to get a taste for these skills without committing to a large, repetitive project. Gradually your quilting skills build, along with your modern sampler!

Monthly Schedule

April: We start with a bang, because you have so much energy at the beginning! Circle Squares, HST and Postage Stamp Stars (above).

May: Two favorites! Sawtooth Burst is traditionally pieced, with attention to value to create the burst effect. Evening Star is a clever piece of applique.

June: Wedge Cross is a strong, dynamic block, but the paper piecing is amazingly simple! Pinwheel Star is an easy win, to help you keep up momentum.

July: Still Point and Checkers. This month you’ll learn to sew a y-seam with that fancy Still Point group. You’re going to feel so smart!

August: Haven’t you always wanted to sew Orange Peel blocks? I love them too! Also discover the surprising ease of partial seams with Transparency.

September: We wrap things up with two simple, satisfying sews: Economy and Hourglass.

Format

Each month in this 6-month sew-along, you’ll receive an email to download the digital pattern booklet. Also expect tips for making effective fabric and/or color choices with our patchwork ensemble. Plus, I’ll share examples from our Pas de Deux community, because there are lots of wonderfully different ways to create something beautiful!

How does it work?

Club members receive monthly installments of original, digital patterns designed for the Pas de Deux quilt. All patterns are PDF’s and printable on standard paper.
